A Technical Overview of Gas Meter Pulse Readers

Pulse readers are interface modules that extract digital information from mechanical diaphragm gas meters. They provide a simple and reliable method for integrating conventional meters into modern data acquisition systems.

Measurement Principle

Gas flow causes the meter’s internal index gears to rotate. When a magnet is embedded in the index, a pulse reader detects its passage using magnetic reed switches or Hall-effect sensors.

One pulse corresponds to a precise and predefined gas volume. The output signal is a discrete event, not a continuous measurement.

Signal Characteristics

Pulse reader outputs are designed for robustness:

  • Low frequency (1–20 Hz typical)

  • Excellent noise immunity

  • Very low power consumption

  • Suitable for PLC, AMR/AMI, SCADA, and IoT gateway integration

These characteristics make pulse readers highly reliable for long-term deployment.

Data Interpretation

Pulse readers output pulse counts only.
Instantaneous flow and consumption profiles must be computed by the receiving system using the timestamped pulse stream.

This architecture ensures stable measurement while allowing advanced analytics—such as anomaly detection, peak flow estimation, and consumption pattern mapping—to be handled externally.

Applications

Pulse readers are widely used in:

  • Utility metering upgrades

  • Industrial gas monitoring

  • Remote billing systems
